Lake Michigan Wood Chart
The only one of the Great Lakes located entirely in the US, Lake Michigan's beaches are sometimes referred to as the Third Coast (after those of the Pacific and Atlantic). When standing on the waters edge in Illinois, Wisconsin, or anywhere on the lower peninsula of Michigan, it's impossible to see land across the lake and the view is similar to that of an ocean.
The other four Great Lakes are shared by the U.S. and Canada to the east, its basin is conjoined with that of Lake Huron through the wide Straits of Mackinac, giving it the same surface elevation as its easterly counterpart; the two are technically a single lake. Lake Michigan is bounded, from west to east, by the U.S. states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.
