Maker & Moss Design — studio interior with natural light and collected objects.

Our Studio

Who We Are

Maker & Moss is a San Francisco interior design studio founded in 2013. We design spaces that are personal, sophisticated, and built to be lived in, rooms with warmth, eclecticism, and a point of view that develops through genuine collaboration. Our approach is grounded in natural materials and honest craftsmanship, and we bring the same careful attention to a single room as we do to a complete home. Before anything else, we listen. It’s the most important part of the job and what allows us to deliver your vision, refined through our lens.

Matt Bissinger

Founder

Matt Bissinger founded Maker & Moss in 2013 and has more than two decades working in the design and furniture world. A fourth-generation San Franciscan, he studied art and photography at the San Francisco Art Institute before finding his way into interior and decor — drawn to the intersection of craft, sustainability, and the kind of design that improves with time.

His aesthetic is shaped by California: textured, warm, and rooted in the mid-century modernism that runs through so much of the Bay Area’s architecture and culture. He’s spent his career looking for pieces and makers that hold up, in quality and in character.

Beyond the studio, Matt has served on the boards of the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library and the SFPL Hormel Center, and currently serves on the Asian Art Museum Board.

Maker & Moss Design — Briana Tunison, principal designer.

Briana Tunison

Principal Designer

Briana Tunison holds a degree in Interior Design from San Francisco State University and brings that training and professional experience to her work at Maker & Moss. She designs spaces that feel personal — built around the people who live in them rather than a particular trend or formula.

Briana grew up in the Bay Area and has family scattered throughout the Pacific Northwest. Traveling up and down the coast gave her abiding appreciation for the architecture, open landscapes, and art and design across the west coast. These early influences inspired her to pursue a career in design. After starting her career in business management, she realized something was missing. Interior design gave her the answer, a way to bring her management skills and creativity together.

She’s as comfortable with a spare, modern brief as she is with something layered and eclectic. Throughout every project she brings a relaxed, cozy, and welcoming style that is uniquely Californian. She carries a project all the way through — the person who measured your space is the one choosing every finish, fabric, and fixture. Nothing gets handed off. Sustainability informs how she sources and specifies, not as a constraint but as a design value she’s held from the start.

Scott Upper

Multifamily & Commercial Design Lead

Scott Upper leads Maker & Moss’s work in multifamily and commercial design, bringing a background in space planning and contract furniture to projects that require both design sensibility and operational precision. With experience across luxury residential communities and hospitality environments in the Bay Area and beyond, he’s built the supplier relationships and project management practice to take larger-scale work from concept through installation without losing the detail that defines the studio’s approach.

Nancy Wall

Client Liaison, Central Coast & Los Angeles

Nancy Wall is a resident of Montecito and San Francisco. She graduated from UC Berkeley and completed Christie’s Fine and Decorative Arts Master’s Program in London. Having visited 97 countries, Nancy draws inspiration from the colors, textures, and spaces she has encountered throughout her travels.

She has spent a lifetime attuned to how environments feel, the way light moves through a room and how a well-chosen piece can anchor an entire home. At Maker & Moss, Nancy serves as client liaison and regional presence for the Central Coast and Los Angeles, connecting clients with the studio’s design and sourcing expertise. She is the kind of person who remembers what you loved three years ago and finds it.

E. Carmen Torres

Client Services & Operations

Carmen Torres comes to Maker & Moss after more than 20 years in San Francisco’s nonprofit sector, where she built a career around donor relations, operations, and organizational management. She’s overseen campaigns, managed teams, and served as a point of contact for boards, major donors, and executive leadership — work that demands the same qualities that make for excellent client services: follow-through, clear communication, and genuine care for the people she works with.

Her roots are firmly in San Francisco and the Bay Area, and her commitment to the communities here — particularly around arts access, STEM education, and public greenspace — reflects the same values that drew her to Maker & Moss.

“We believe in painting outside of the lines, eclectic styling, and not putting arbitrary limits on ourselves or our clients.”
