Sacramento was home to the Maidu, Nissan and other indigenous people for thousands of years before the invasion by the Spanish, who named the city after the Catholic sacrament of the Eucharist. The area is known as the City of Trees thanks to its abundance of foliage, and it holds the title of sunniest location on the earth for three months each year, from July to September.
